The Shanghai Grand Opera House, designed by Snøhetta, will officially open on October 17, 2026. The project has entered its final phase, with preparations for the opening now underway.
Located on the banks of the Huangpu River, the opera house is a key component of Shanghai’s cultural masterplan. Conceived as both a world-class performing arts venue and a public destination, it features three state-of-the-art auditoriums for productions of varying scales and genres, along with a rooftop that remains open to the public year-round. The building’s form draws inspiration from the movements of performers on stage and the flowing river. A sweeping roof, reminiscent of an unfurled fan, wraps around the three auditoriums, while its radial geometry creates a strong sense of movement.

The concept of the broad spiral extends throughout the building. Deep red interior volumes define the lobby and circulation spaces, linking the three performance halls into a unified architectural experience. Radial stairs and a spiraling circulation route lead visitors to the rooftop, offering views of the Shanghai skyline and the Huangpu River. The rooftop serves as a public stage, observation deck, and gathering space, while the surrounding landscape adopts a radial layout that echoes the building’s geometry, seamlessly connecting architecture, the city, and nature.

“It is incredibly rewarding to see this remarkable project approaching its opening. Watching such an ambitious vision become reality has been special. Soon, the building will belong to the people of Shanghai and its visitors, whether they come to experience a performance or simply enjoy the building and its surrounding park. I hope it will become a place that inspires, brings people together, and stands as a new landmark for the city,” says Kjetil Trædal Thorsen, Founding Partner of Snøhetta.
Following Snøhetta’s winning proposal in the 2016 international competition, Snøhetta, East China Architectural Design & Research InstituteECADI, Theatre Projects, and Nagata Acoustics were commissioned in 2019 to deliver the project from concept to completion.
The opening season will run from October 17, 2026, to February 20, 2027, featuring 47 productions across 82 performances, launching a new chapter in Shanghai’s performing arts scene.
