Henning Larsen, in collaboration with Ramboll, Cistri, Gehl, Participate in Design, URBAN+, and LOPELAB, has been selected to design the master plan for Singapore‘s North-South Corridor surface streets. The project, stretching 21.5 kilometers, is an ambitious urban development initiative that integrates public transportation, community spaces, movement pathways, and green infrastructure along the corridor. This project aligns with Singapore’s vision of a “city within nature,” emphasizing sustainability, connectivity, and adaptability.
Divided into four distinct sections, the North-South Corridor will serve various urban needs. These sections include a 6-kilometer community-industrial segment, a 7-kilometer ecological loop, a 5-kilometer resident wellness zone, and a 3.5-kilometer cultural heritage area. Over 20 features along the corridor will support industrial activities, ecological preservation, public wellness, and cultural engagement, creating a diverse urban experience that fosters vibrant community interaction.
Green infrastructure is a central element of the master plan, creating open spaces, movement paths, and community-friendly spots that encourage public engagement. The North-South Corridor will be a landmark for sustainable transportation, offering a barrier-free, pedestrian-first environment. One key highlight will be a public plaza at the intersection of Little India, Kampong Gelam, and Albert Street, designed to foster social engagement and connect neighborhoods.
Henning Larsen’s Leonard Ng, Country Market Director, emphasizes that the project is about more than just redesigning roads; it’s about creating dynamic, adaptable spaces that reflect community needs and evolve with the city. Drawing from his childhood memories of communal corridors in Singapore’s apartments, Ng envisions this project as a blueprint for future urban mobility and living. The corridor is designed to ensure safety and efficiency for pedestrians, cyclists, personal mobility device users, and public buses while promoting connectivity and resilience.
The competition, organized by the Land Transport Authority of Singapore, attracted 26 local and international teams to submit proposals. The master plan design will take place over the next 18 months, with completion expected by 2026, positioning the North-South Corridor as a showcase for innovative, sustainable urban planning in Singapore.
