Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners (RSHP), in collaboration with Tongji Architectural Design (TJAD), has been selected to design the next phase of the Zhongyuan International Convention Center, Conference Center, and Hotel Complex in Zhengzhou, Henan, China. Situated within the Zhengzhou Airport Economic Zone (ZAEZ), adjacent to Xinzheng International Airport, the project aims to create a landmark venue capable of hosting a variety of large-scale events, with strong connections to both domestic and international transportation systems.
The new development will expand to the east and west of a park south of the existing convention center, covering a total area of 527,000 m². It will feature a central axis that stretches 1.7 kilometers, linking three main entrance pavilions, 16 exhibition halls, a conference center, and a hotel. The exhibition halls, each measuring 12,500 m², will be situated on either side of the central spine. This design emphasizes connectivity and modularity, ensuring smooth navigation throughout the complex, with clearly defined areas for exhibition viewing, dining, and shopping activities.
The key element of the design is the integration of two levels along the central axis, which will enhance visitor flow. Upon entering the upper level through one of the three entrance pavilions, visitors will pass through ticketing and security before being guided via travelators toward the exhibition halls. The upper level will also connect the convention center, conference center, and hotel across the park. From this mezzanine level, visitors will have an elevated view of the exhibits below, before descending to explore the event spaces. The lower level will house restaurants and public spaces, where visitors can relax and appreciate the architectural elegance of the surrounding structures.
Richard Paul, Senior Director and Partner at RSHP, expressed excitement about the project, stating, “The Zhongyuan Convention Center’s design combines state-of-the-art technology with traditional cultural elements to create a landmark that will meet the needs of large-scale gatherings while incorporating cutting-edge technology. We have taken great care to ensure that the complex promotes global connectivity, symbolizes local identity, and provides innovative experiences for visitors.”
The architectural language of the new phase will align with the design of the existing Phase 1 convention center, maintaining a cohesive visual identity. The cantilevered wings and expansive roofs, symbolic of inclusivity, reflect the spirit of Zhongyuan. The design prioritizes flexibility and functionality, with the entire spatial arrangement centered around the main axis, representing a modern, international style.
