Ocean Stories

A Public Space Connecting Local Communities and the Marine Industry

Transborder Studio

Ocean Stories, a new visitor center dedicated to the sea and coastal communities, has opened at the harbor of Honningsvåg in Finnmark, Norway‘s northernmost region. The project explores marine environments, aquaculture, and ocean resource management through the perspective of northern coastal communities. It functions both as an exhibition venue and as a community hub connecting residents, researchers, and visitors, while helping bring new activity to the harbor district.

The building faces one of Norway‘s busiest cruise ports. Traditional fishing village architecture and postwar harbor buildings coexist in the surrounding area, and this context became the starting point for the design. Defined by a simple gabled form, the building recalls boathouses and industrial sheds. Rather than appearing monumental, it quietly blends into the materials, landscape, and daily rhythms of the northern coastal town. The façade expresses a strong sense of place. The upper portion is clad in corrugated recycled aluminium with a 75 percent recycled content, reflecting the rugged atmosphere of the harbor. The lower section is finished with 6-centimeter-thick quartzite sourced from Kautokeino. The layered textures and wave-like patterns of the stone recall the surface of the Arctic Sea, creating an appearance shaped by the movement of water.

The structure is based on a timber system using CLT walls. To withstand the harsh climate of northern Norway, the project adopted a prefabrication strategy that minimized on-site construction time. Most components were preassembled before installation on the quay. Inside, exposed CLT surfaces introduce warmth that contrasts with the cold and rugged exterior environment. Junctions and finishing details are carefully resolved without becoming overly decorative.
The program is designed to operate flexibly throughout the year. The ground floor serves as a shared community space for residents and visitors, while the upper exhibition floors present the history of Honningsvåg‘s fisheries, environmental challenges facing aquaculture, and possible futures for marine resource management. The building also accommodates researchers working on marine and coastal studies. During the off-season, it hosts educational programs, small events, and local gatherings.
