Market Hall in Bois d’Arcy

A Timber Framework Draw on the Local Context

ACAU Architectes

Located in the historic center of Bois-d’Arcy in Yvelines, Île-de-France, this market hall is conceived as public infrastructure supporting everyday urban life. A continuous canopy wraps the building, accommodating a variety of programs beneath it and shaping the space through a clear and legible architectural concept. The structure is formed by a regular timber grid, calibrated to organize the dimensions of market stalls and internal circulation. This ordered framework ensures functional efficiency and spatial clarity, allowing flexible configurations while maintaining a coherent architectural identity.

The building stands on an integrally cast concrete base, anchoring it to the ground and ensuring durability. All timber elements are positioned more than two meters above ground level and protected beneath the roof, minimizing exposure to the elements. This approach reflects a balance between material expression, technical performance, and long-term maintenance.
A defining feature of the project is its high degree of visual and functional openness between interior and exterior spaces. Large openings enhance accessibility and guide the flow of movement, strengthening the relationship between the building and surrounding public areas to create an open and active environment. At the same time, these openings can be fully closed when needed, ensuring security and operational flexibility.

On the northeast side, a multipurpose room has independent access and can connect directly to the market hall. Conceived as a showcase space, it engages with the public realm and extends beneath the projecting canopy. Natural light is introduced through roof openings above circulation areas and at the rear of the multipurpose room, bringing daylight deep into the interior and enhancing spatial comfort.
On the western side, technical rooms, waste management areas, and sanitary facilities complete the program. The upper portions of these volumes accommodate ventilation ducts, maximizing spatial efficiency. Drawing on the tones of stone facades found in the historic center, the building integrates with its surroundings. The combination of concrete, timber structure, and wooden cladding establishes a restrained and coherent architectural language.

The surrounding outdoor spaces consist of a forecourt and a landscaped parking area designed for circulation and environmental performance. The parking area allows rainwater to permeate the ground, supporting natural water cycles, while a collection and storage system enables reuse for irrigation and cleaning. This strategy improves operational efficiency and environmental performance. The hall is designed to host weekly markets and large-scale events, functioning as a flexible public space for everyday use and special occasions.
