Watchtower Einderheide

A Vertical Structure for Ecological Coexistence

NEXT architects

Located in the Brabantse Kempen forest in the Netherlands, the Watchtower Einderheide is both a lookout structure and a habitat for bats. A spiral staircase leads to the 26m summit, with openings of varying sizes and orientations placed along the ascent. These frame the forest from multiple angles, while certain points allow visitors to pause and observe the surroundings more closely. Rather than concentrating the experience at the top, the tower unfolds a sequence of spatial experiences throughout the climb. Its exterior, defined by a repetition of vertical members, is clearly visible among the trees while maintaining a restrained presence.

At its core, the structure is shaped by ecological considerations. Within the timber framework, narrow slits and pocket-like spaces create conditions suitable for bats. These are used seasonally for resting, hibernation, and breeding. At the base, a semi-subterranean concrete volume stabilizes temperature and humidity while also serving as the structural foundation. The habitat strategy was developed in collaboration with an ecologist.
The structure is built from laminated larch columns, with an outer layer of thermally treated pine. The materials are left exposed, allowing both texture and structural logic to be clearly expressed. The rough surface, similar to that of tree trunks, provides suitable conditions for bats to land and climb. This approach relates to the surrounding forest while supporting its intended use.

The tower forms the final element in a series of area icons along the N69 corridor. Rather than functioning as a singular destination, it acts as a point from which the surrounding environment can be experienced. By accommodating viewing, rest, and habitat within a single structure, the project demonstrates how architecture can extend beyond human use to operate within a broader ecological context.
