A cave-like concrete house in Tokyo

House T, Japan

Suppose Design Office |

House T is like a cave within the city. It is a private residence, with the appearance of a concrete box, which is designed to be an enclosed private space which also allows access to the natural world outside. Within the concrete box, a gradation of light and darkness is created by narrow openings. No air conditioning is needed: in summer, the space is cooled with water pipes laid across the ceiling. In winter, it gets its warmth through the running of heated water under the floor, and from the fireplace. These elemental features contribute to the cave-like feeling, as if the house had been there since the beginning of time.

Adding to this natural, elemental feel is the choice of natural wood and exposed concrete for the interior surfaces and finishes, and rattan on furniture and floor coverings. The upper level is bathed in light thanks to a large opening at the back of the house, while the middle level enjoys double-height ceilings with light controlled through narrow apertures. The brooding natural lighting effects add to the feeling of seclusion within the cavernous interior. A large, minimalist, blockish kitchen island also resembles a geological formation or monolith hewn from a larger rock. Black marble flooring contributes to the appearance of a dark, primal habitation carved out of a rock.

A semi-outdoor terrace space benefits from natural lighting while retaining privacy from the surrounding cityscape with high balcony walls. At night a circular outdoor lamp bathes the terrace in soft, ice-white light, almost like the moon.
The ground floor entrance is recessed creating the effect of a wide-open cave mouth. An external staircase on the side elevation, almost brutalist in appearance, contributes to the idea of an ascent along a cliff path, while overhanging from the roof and the mid-floor terrace, are verdant plants. Rather than being imposing, this concrete box-like structure appears to blend in amongst the other houses on the residential street, giving the effect of hiding in plain sight.
