The 2024 TAB(Tallinn Architecture Biennale) will take place from October 9 to December 1. Organized by ECA(Estonian Center for Architecture), the TAB has been held since 2011 as a platform for architectural discourse addressing timely social issues, gathering people, exploring the present and future, and introducing local architectural culture to promote a better built environment.
This year’s theme is ‘Resources for Future’. It is a time to consider alternative ways of using resources in architecture, construction, and urban planning. In line with this, the Installation Programme competition titled ‘For-This-Situation Pavilion’ is being conducted. Participants are encouraged to explore new methods of using recycled resources and to construct a durable structure with bio-based materials. The challenge is to propose a space that will function as a waiting area and urban refuge at the transport hub ‘Balti Jaam’ in Tallinn, Estonia. The competition expects submissions that are both structurally robust and able to embody a vision of regenerative design, effectively reflecting the theme.
Curators of the competition, Laura Linsi and Roland Reemaa, explain, “We live in unprecedented times, yet we continue with our lives. This competition explores the agile qualities of architecture – collaborative authorship, regenerative design, non-linear construction processes – amidst romanticized pasts and utopian futures.” They further state, “Through the competition, we seek new alternatives on how an architectural project can be planned, constructed, maintained, and dismantled in the form of a temporary pavilion.” Additionally, Daniel A. Walser, a member of the curatorial team, comments, “By transforming the competition from producing artistic display objects to constructing functional architecture at the central train station, we aim to show the results to a wider audience. Architecture is not only an artistic work but also an important tool for solving today’s problems. Through the competition, we plan to demonstrate how architectural visions can be realized in everyday life.”
