A checkerboard house with eleven patios

Casa Mono

Patio Estudio |

The house is located on the end of a sloped neighborhood in Cordoba, Argentina, that borders a native forest. In contrast to this setting, however, the site on which the house is located was flat, with no vegetation or gradients.
With soil extracted from the land itself, the architects created a slope, over which the house rises 1.30m to peer over the neighboring grove and take advantage of a better view of the landscape. The entrance to the dwelling is on the upper floor, which contains nine different areas: a living room, dining room, kitchen, three bedrooms and three bathrooms. These are connected by a corridor and separated by patios. The first floor has a garage and a barbecue area connected to a swimming pool and a volleyball court.

The patio is the element that separates and connects the different functions of the house. It is used as a device to expand the volume of the house on the ground, generating complementary spaces that allow a link to be created between interior and exterior, bringing the outside in, and allowing the outdoors to be perceived as another part of the house. Each patio has a function that complements the areas of the house to which it is adjoined. The areas are modules that are created from the voids – internal patios – and are connected by a corridor. The original space was fragmented into nine solid volumes and eleven empty volumes, generating eleven patios, and creating a unique checkerboard appearance that plays with geometries and lines of sight.

The house is a monolithic structure generated by a concrete skin that envelops the house and gives it an introverted character. It generates intimacy, and privacy from the neighboring properties, while orienting the visuals towards the “inside” patios. The materials reinforce this monolithic nature, with a concrete and stone exterior and a predominantly wood interior.
