Models in Models: Shanghai architectural model museum

Inspired by Archi-Depot, Tokyo’s warehouse-style architectural model museum, Fengyuzhu’s founder hoped to replicate this success in Shanghai with a museum showcasing the work of China’s preeminent architects. The architects explain: “if we look at these vastly different projects from a macro perspective, and ignore the difference in region and time period, they can form a world together….This museum is a mega model of the future city.”
1909 theorem
To the architects, the dense models on Archi-Depot’s shelves were reminiscent of A B Walker’s 1909 comic quoted by Rem Koolhaas in Delirious New York, a utopian imagination of skyscrapers that shaped the prototype of the vertical city in the early 20th century. This served as inspiration to make the museum a model of the future vertical city.
The Last Redoubt: Construction of invisible structures
A total of 5,653 steel pipes were used to build the vertical city of Last Redoubt, forming a rhythm and composing interfaces that partition different areas in the vertical city.
The design considers both human and model scales. From a model scale perspective, the Last Redoubt has a height of more than ten levels, with all the model plates cantilevered and welded on the round bars. Different models are located on the supporting plates at different heights. On a human scale, the museum has a mezzanine that spans across all exhibition areas, suspended by white round steel tubes with a diameter of 32mm. The mezzanine hides between interfaces formed by steel bars, in order to avoid visual conflicts between the two scales. Visitors can walk between models, which forms an important circulation for experiencing the museum and constitutes a part of the overall model.
Pantheon
The circular space in the southwest corner of the original plane is the only socializing space in the museum. This is conceived as the city’s ‘Pantheon’, a peaceful place filled with divine light.
On the side of the dome is the staircase that leads to the mezzanine, with perforated floor slabs originally designed for reducing the weight of the mezzanine. These perforations allow light to penetrate and filter into the room below, lending a futuristic appearance to the exhibition room below reminiscent of the film Blade Runner.
The Last Redoubt was embedded onto the original irregular plane as a complete square city, which left some fragmentary corner spaces on the plane; these function as ‘sacred spaces’ which connect the architectural model museum with the real world.
The architects originally intended to isolate the museum interior with curtains, making it a completely inward-looking and intact space. However, after the round rods were erected, ethereal sunlight filtered and fell into the museum, making it look simultaneously real yet unreal, as if the entity was dissolving.
“Openness, temporality, diversity, chance, accident or temporary amnesia, instant inspiration, short-lived beauty and slight fragility are also worthy of attention….I regard the architectural model museum as an architectural manifesto”, explained the architect. “Architecture must face the future, and shouldn’t hide behind the shell of history, context and regionalism. It needs to take these as a starting point to create a more ambitious future.”
